I gave this 4 fulfilling-points not only at face value, but also for being among the scarce WW2 movies that don't just spin the usual playbook of the victors. It is actually presented from inside the German frontline, albeit as an inter-personal conflict, and politically-convenient (as a Western production) set up against the backdrop of the Soviet front. It gives you an eerie mix of shivers and compassion, for that you sense this is closer to how things happened, if you know some real history and of the enormous tragedy of the German people fighting the "allies". I was especially moved by the scenes at a nursing home, knowing what horrific fate would await that staff at the hands of the bolshevik hordes. At least the soldiers could save the last bullet for themselves, we think. If you can stomach the front and end credits (including an abysmal quote from the infatuated marxist B. Brecht), and forgive the dated stunts, the picture is a compelling watch.
